Chronologically speaking, implantology is the latest branch of dental medicine which focusses on the supply of toothless space with jaw implants and associated prosthetics. Prosthesis superstructure consists of abutment and crowns, bridges or dentures. For implants there are two possible types of prosthetic superstructures: the ones that are screwed together and the ones that are cemented. Depending on the primary stability of the implant load can be immediate or delayed.
Replacing the tooth root with implant is performed if it is decided that a root-canal procedure is not possible. The implant is usually immediately supplied with a temporary crown or, in the absence of sufficient bone volume, bone augmentation is implemented. Permanent prosthetic solutions are provided after the implant osteointegration.
Implant and crown placement within one hour of each other requires scanning of the jaws (3D computed tomography) and virtual planning of the implant position with the help of a specialised computer program. If bone volume is sufficient (evidenced from CT scans) a template is ordered from the Procera factory in Sweden that allows the installation of the implants. The surgical procedure is minimally invasive that requires no incisions or suturing and after surgery pain is managed by ordinary pain killing tablets. From this same template a plaster model is cast in the dental laboratory from which the teeth are made so that the patient receives the implants and teeth within one hour .
The process from implant placement to providing permanent prosthetic solutions would, until recent years, usually take three to six months. This period was necessary for proper osteointegration of the implants. Advances in implant surface technology mean that today in many cases immediate loading can take place without this waiting period. In the area where the tooth implant is installed and depending on the structure of the bone a temporary or permanent crown can be installed.
